Richard Everard Buckworth-Herne-Soame, Age 24

Sargeant, 14394, Depot, 7th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

Richard was born in Doseley in 1891 and lived in Horsehay, His mother was a widow named Mary Edge, but his father was Sir Charles Buckworth-Herne-Soame (The 10th Baronet of Sheen in Surrey). At around the time of the First War, Sir Charles was the local Doctor having his surgery on Dawley high street.

I have seen information stating that Richard was a lieutenant but according to Soldiers Died in the KSLI his rank was sergeant. He had served in France but had been wounded badly on July 14th whilst serving with the 7th KSLI enough to warrant being sent to the UK, His name then appears on the list of men serving with the KSLI Depot. It was whilst in the UK that he died from the effects of his wounds on the 30th July 1916.

He was buried at Eastbourne, his obituary also cleared up the details of his mother Mary Edge.

Richard's brother Charles Bernard Buckworth Herne Soame also served in the 6th KSLI (Pte 11758) and his name appeared in the Ludlow advertiser ‘wounded list’ on the 14th October 1916, it is likely that Charles had been wounded whilst with the 6th KSLI on the Somme sometime between August 31st and September 6th. Later during the war he was to serve with the 1st Ox & Bucks Light Infantry and survived the War.
